Short-Term Disability

Short-Term Disability Insurance – Voluntary (VSTD)

The Voluntary Short-Term Disability (VSTD) benefit provides you with 60% of your income, up to a maximum of $3,000 per week, for up to 150 calendar days, after 30 days of disability. All full-time faculty and staff with less than two years of benefit eligible service, part-time faculty and staff as well as medical residents are eligible to participate. (If elected, part-time staff have a six-month eligibility waiting period from date of hire before the benefit is effective.) Your benefit payment may be reduced if you receive Social Security or other income supplements while you are disabled.

You can enroll in Voluntary Short-Term Disability within 30 calendar days of your hire date or transfer from a benefit ineligible to benefit eligible position. You can also enroll during Annual Open Enrollment.

If you choose not to enroll in voluntary short-term disability during your new hire enrollment period, but enroll at a later time, you will be required to provide evidence of insurability (EOI). Coverage is dependent upon The Standard, our disability administrator, approving your EOI.

Short-Term Disability Insurance - GW Paid (STD)

The GW Paid STD benefit provides you with either 50% or 100% of your benefits eligible salary, depending on years of benefits eligible service, for up to 166 calendar days after 14 calendar days of disability.

All full-time faculty and staff with two or more years of benefit eligible service will be automatically enrolled in the corresponding STD plan effective the first of the month following your anniversary date. If you are enrolled in the employee paid Voluntary Short-Term Disability plan, the voluntary benefit will end once the GW Paid Short-Term Disability benefit becomes effective.

Please note that your benefit payments under this plan may be reduced if you receive Social Security or other income supplements while you are disabled.
